You’ve probably heard some buzz about Brazil lately…something to do with games, or a big sporting event in Rio of some kind. While you may not be able to make it down for the summer events, you can Samba over to these cities for a taste of Brazil right here in the States – no passport required.
Leave it to New York City to dedicate an entire neighborhood to the colorful culture of Brazil. A single city block, West 46th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, boasts Brazilian restaurants and shops that are easily recognizable thanks to their green and yellow signage and Brazilian flags. This neighborhood is also known for hosting the annual Brazilian Day in early September, a raucous celebration that’s said to be one of the largest festivals dedicated to the culture outside of Brazil.
You wouldn’t think it, but Boston has a healthy Brazilian population, and a hefty offering of Brazilian food as a result. You’ll want to set aside several hours and put on your elastic waistband pants for dinner at Fogo de Chão, a popular churrascaria (Brazilian steakhouse) in Copley Square. For vegetarians and vegans, Bom Café in Cambridge is a great spot for breakfast – try their pão de queijo (homemade cheese rolls) and fresh açai bowls.
Miami is a perfect fit for Brazilian culture – the warm weather, gorgeous beaches and large Latino population make it feel like home. For those looking for a fun place to catch a soccer match, head to Boteco for authentic feijoada (pork and black bean stew) and caipirinhas (traditional cocktail made with cachaça). There’s also free Samba lessons.
Sin City has its own little slice of Brazil as well, and we’re not just referring to the showgirls. Grab a room at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, book a reservation at the spa for some…ahem…Brazilian treatments, and head to the pool to pretend you’re on Ipanema Beach.
Los Angeles wouldn’t be the entertainment (and beautiful people) capital without its fascination with all-things beauty and fitness related. From Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Capoeira, to Brazilian blow-outs and bikini waxes, and even surgical Brazilian butt lifts (yes, that’s a thing!) L.A. is taking its beauty cues from South America’s largest country. We suggest checking out Brasil Brasil Cultural Center, which offers an incredible variety of Brazilian-inspired fitness and dance classes to help get you into killer shape (no scalpels involved).
