We’ve all heard the numbers- nearly 42 Million travelers hit the road last year for Memorial Day, the unofficial kickoff to summer travel. With those kinds of crowds, it’s easy to think that you’ve missed out if you haven’t already booked a trip by the time mid-May rolls around (we’re looking at you, person that did their taxes on April 15).
Fret not- in fact, some types of travel can actually reward those guilty of booking procrastination. Long weekends, when bookings are generally only made semi-locally for two or three nights, are perfect for last-minute trips since inventory is less limited than for a longer, extended vacation. Even better, discount travel sites like Hotwire offer hugely discounted hotel rooms, with killer deals often available in the seven days leading up to check-in. So ignore the rush and feel free to procrastinate, then check out these handy apps to download before your next spontaneous getaway!
Roadtrippers (free for basic version)
Not sure yet where you want to go? Roadtrips offer the most flexibility for your next adventure, but make sure to download this app first. Enter locations and Roadtrippers will share must-see landmarks on the way. Compare cultural attractions, outdoor activities, or other themed points of interest, and collect places to add to your route (or consider theming your roadtrip around a destination type like national parks, spooky spots, or the best photo ops!)
Worried you have to book your hotel in advance to get the best deal? Don’t be. With Hotwire’s Hot Rate offers- opaque deals that reveal the name of your hotel, car or flight carrier after booking- you can find 4+ star hotels at up to 60% off regular published rates. The booking might be blind, but Hotwire offers a wide variety of filters to narrow your search (even the in-app option to see which of 2 hotels your booking is guaranteed to be!) Some of the best deals can be found in the week before arrival, so for the flexible traveler, this is one of the savviest ways to snag discounts on hotels not found anywhere else.
Field Trip (free)
Field Trip was created by Google to help travelers create cool, hidden and unique things in the world. The app runs in the background of your phone and will send an automatic alert when you get close to something interesting. Sourcing information across experts from Historvius, Zagat, Sunset, Atlas Obscura and more, you can discover historic places and events, the best restaurants to dine and drink, quirky landmarks, or anything else that you select as a point of interest in your settings.
Transit is an app built to make commutes easier, but it’s super handy to have on hand when navigating any public transportation in a new city. As they say, Transit is “North America’s favorite transit app,” comparing routes and arrival times across rideshare, bikeshare, carshare, and public transportation options. Just enter your departure and arrival areas, and Transit will provide you the best options for getting from point A to B with real-time data (it will even warn you when you need to get off your bus or metro so you don’t miss your stop!)
TripIt from Concur is an all-inclusive travel planning app that compiles flight and lodging information from various sources into one handy itinerary. Simply forward your flight, hotel, car or other reservation and it will automatically be added to your trip, letting you sync plans with your calendar or share with others. Once you’re on the road, TripIt will also provide maps of airports and terminals, show navigation options, and provides safety scores for the neighborhoods you’re visiting.
